TLDR these aren’t plastic, they’re edible gelatin or pectin and must begin to rupture and dissolve within 15 minutes of submersion in water. A lot of effort goes into producing these things so that they look good and are safe for the environment, whilst also being food safe. The United States pharmacopoeia forbids the use of soft plastics for oil-based single dosage forms, and as an FDA requirement companies must prove that all softgels rupture in water after 15 minutes and fully dissolve within a few hours (USP guideline 2040).īecause they look like softgels they also have to be fully edible and biodegradable.
